MCIC Identifies Top Health Care Services Offered by IPAs: Quality Management Tops the List
Manasquan, N.J. -- Approximately 60 percent of the nation's independent practice associations (IPAs) offer between three and five services to their member physicians, according to data collected and verified by The Managed Care Information Center for the second edition its "National Directory of Physician Organizations."
The analysis, which incorporated responses from more than 300 of the nation's IPAs, examined nine types of services: Authorizations; Claims; Credentialing; Finance; Group Purchasing; Marketing; Quality Management; Referrals; and Utilization Management.
The data showed one in four IPAs offers at five of these nine services (see Table 1).

By specific type of service, the analysis revealed "Quality Management" as the most frequently
cited service of IPAs -- reported by more than 82 percent of respondents (see Table 2).

"This analysis of IPA services is just one example of how the data in MCIC's 'National
Directory of Physician Organizations' can be used to reveal market trends and industry
statistics," said Gwen Lareau, special projects director at MCIC.
The National Directory of Physician Organizations contains detailed profiles for more than 3,100 physician organizations, including: IPAs, physician hospital organizations and primary care networks. The Directory is indexed 8 ways -- by each of the seven executive titles; PHO organization name; IPA organization name; MSO name; and affiliated/participating hospitals -- all cross-referenced to their detailed profiles for easy reference.
