The Year Ahead for IDSs -- Seven Major Trends Identified

Manasquan, N.J. As consumers demand more for their healthcare dollar, integrated delivery systems (IDSs) will continue to build and refine their ability to offer quality, affordable healthcare services that span the continuum of care. In the year ahead, IDSs will be affected by seven different trends, according to the Managed Care Information Center (MCIC).

MCIC, publisher of The Integrated Healthcare Delivery System Yearbook, is experienced in covering trends and developments that affect integrated healthcare delivery systems and predicts that in addition to rising healthcare costs, IDSs can expect to be affected by the following trends in 1999:

1. The number of multi-hospital IDSs will increase;

2. Hospitals and physicians will improve their working relationships;

3. IDSs will have to deal with more "niche" competitors;

4. Physician-hospital organizations (PHOs) will operate more efficiently;

5. The number of hospital-sponsored, management services organizations (MSOs) will increase especially in the face of a turbulent physician practice management industry (i.e., MedPartners' withdrawal from the industry and the Chapter 11 filing by key players such as FPA Medical Management and BMJ Medical Management);

6. Accreditation will be important to attract members and build brand; and

7. Information technology will be essential (Y2K compliance and the increased use of computer-based patient records).

The Integrated Healthcare Delivery System Yearbook features entire chapters dedicated to: trends affecting the formation of IDSs; capitation issues; the role and effect of managed care on IDSs; the Medicare market; physician compensation, outcomes and performance measurement; healthcare IS/IT issues; management strategies; marketing an IDS; IDS success stories; and developments in the physician practice management industry.

The Integrated Healthcare Delivery System Yearbook is available at reduced price of $187 almost 17 percent off the original price plus $8 for shipping and handling.
